How To Write Well:

Section 5 - Visuals in Writing

Contents: Visuals in Writing

Visuals in Writing:

Some things just don't lend themselves to word-explanations. They need visuals plus some words to explain them. All of us from tiny children, learned to understand language using pictures, for example:

  • the 'picture' alphabet;

  • comics and weeklies;

  • illustrated books and magazines, etc.

Visuals in report writing help to paint a picture and save valuable time.

Photographs, diagrams, plans, sketches and maps help the reader see the point.

Charts, bar charts, tables and graphs make comparisons, argue a case, or present complicated subjects.

All too often writers forget that their audience are not mind readers. Reading someone else's words is like trying to make a journey through their mind. So present your ideas in a way that will prevent your reader from getting lost!
